About Us

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) established the Faculty of Perioperative Care in recognition of the evolving and increasingly important role that Surgical Care Practitioners (SCPs) and Surgical First Assistants (SFAs) play as part of the wider surgical team in delivering safe, surgical care to patients.

Surgical Care Practitioners (SCPs) and Surgical First Assistants (SFAs) – as well as those who are predominantly experienced operating theatre practitioners - are an integral part of the modern surgical workforce and the aim of the Faculty of Perioperative Care is to offer support and career development opportunities for practitioners in this field, with regards to education, training and the setting of RCSEd-accredited standards.
