The Perioperative Practitioner: Reshaping the Surgical Team: Integration of the Non-Medical Practitioner into Surgery

The Faculty of Perioperative Care Annual Conference 2019 which took place on Saturday 9 November 2019 focused on the incorporation all non-medical practitioner roles in surgery. The two-day event covered specific areas of practice relating to the more established roles i.e. SCP and SFA, but in addition addressed the contributions made by the more recent appointments of Physician Associates (PA) and Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACP) in surgery.

Speakers for the conference included:

  • Clare Sutherland: Senior Professional Advisor and Corporate Lead for Advanced Practice, Derby NHS Trust
  • Norman Briffa: Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals
  • Teresa Hardcastle: Senior Lecturer Dept of Allied Health Professionals, Edgehill University
  • Andrew Dickinson: Consultant Urologist University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust 

The conference was open to all perioperative practitioners, as well as surgeons who work closely with advanced practitioners (e.g. surgical care practitioners, surgical first assistants, Physician Associates,) with an interest in the future of the surgical team.

The confrerence was proceeded by two interactive workshops on Friday 8 November 2019:
